21 www.eaaci2019.org Nikolaos Papadopoulos Domingo Barber Hernández Domingo Barber Hernandez - Paul Ehrlich Award for Experimental Research The 2019 Paul Ehrlich Award for Experimental Research is awarded to Dr. Domingo Barber Hernández, a Graduate in Chemistry at the UCM-Madrid and Doctor in Biochemistry at UPM-Madrid. From 1987-2013, he has been working in the Research and Development Area of ALK-Abello Group, a leading company in the allergy field. Dr. Barber´s actions and works have been capital for the development of the first globally registered allergen immunotherapy treatments and have contributed to a great extent in the development of new diagnosis and intervention strategies in food and respiratory allergy. In 2013 Dr. Barber joined the CEU San Pablo University as Director of the Institute for Applied Molecular Medicine and currently leads a group of over 20 researchers in the field of allergy. He also coordinates a research network program (RETIC-ARADyAL of ISCIII, Spain). In these last years his group has uncovered new mechanisms associated with severe allergy evolution. Dr. Barber has published more than 150 publications of high scientific impact. Currently, he is the principal investigator in two national competitive research projects and one European one. He is an active member in both Spanish Society of Allergology and Clinical Immunology (SEAIC) and EAACI. Nikolaos Papadopoulos - Charles Blackley Award for Promotion of the Allergy Specialty The 2019 Charles Blackley Award for Promotion of the Allergy Specialty is awarded to Professor Nikolaos Papadopoulos. He is professor of Allergy and Pediatric Allergy at the University of Manchester Centre for Paediatrics and Child Health, Manchester, United Kingdom, and head of the Allergy Department, 2nd Pediatric Clinic at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens Medical School, Greece. In addition to being a Past-President of EAACI, he has held the position of EAACI Secretary General and EAACI Vice President for Communication. In these positions he started many new initiatives which have been of great importance in the development of the academy. In addition, Nikolaos Papadopoulos was one of the founders of EAACI’s website and the first EAACI webmaster. Professor Nikolaos Papadopoulos’ research has a focus on the role of viral infections in asthma which has been recognized internationally, and he has received international awards for this work. He was the instigator and coordinator of the EU FP7 project Predicta. In addition, he has been active in many research consortia on food allergy. Professor Papadopoulos has published more than 360 papers with over 15000 citations (H-index 59, Scopus). He has been actively involved in European/International guideline development and was the first author of the International Consensus on Pediatric Asthma (ICON), which was produced under the auspices of EAACI, AAAAI, ACAAI and WAO. In addition he was part of the team producing the Pediatric Asthma PRACTALL consensus report, proposing among others, the algorithm to identify pediatric asthma phenotypes. Hideaki Morita- PhARF Award Throughout his career, Dr. Morita has demonstrated his unique talents and extraordinary ability as a researcher in immunology and allergology. He received his medical degree and Ph.D. degree from the Department of Pediatrics, Keio University in Japan. He became a group leader in the Department of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, National Research Institute for Child Health and Development, Japan in 2016. During his career Dr. Morita has been an ad hoc reviewer for respected journals such as Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, and Allergy, and was selected as a “Distinguished Reviewer” by Allergy in 2019 because of high number and high quality of reviews. Dr. Morita has mentored five international post-doctoral fellows, five guest scientists and more than seven graduate students. He authored or co-authored 45 peer-reviewed original articles that have been published in the most prestigious journals in the field. Many of those articles reported extremely important discoveries in the fields of immunology, allergology and pediatrics. In addition, he authored or co-authored 11 review articles and three book chapters as essential contributions in his research areas. Dr. Morita has made major contributions to immunology and allergology by making important discoveries based on very original ideas. The findings of his research have been shared with the at large medical community through publication of almost a hundred scholarly articles that he has written and almost a hundred invited talks that he has given nationally and internationally. Dr. Morita is a member of various well-known professional societies such as European Academy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, Japanese Society of Allergology, and Japanese Society of Immunology. Moreover, Dr. Morita has reviewed and evaluated the actual research, data and methodologies of other researchers in the fields of allergy, immunology and medicine.
