20 www.eaaci2019.org Montserrat Fernandez- Rivas Susanne Halken Montserrat Fernandez- Rivas – Clemens von Pirquet Award for Clinical Research The 2019 Clemens von Pirquet Award for Clinical Research is awarded to Professor Montserrat Fernandez-Rivas who has significantly contributed to our understanding of food allergy. Prof Fernandez-Rivas holds MD and PhD degrees and obtained her board-certification in Allergology at Hospital Universitario Ramon y Cajal in Madrid. She completed her education with master programs in methodology of clinical research and clinical management. Since 2011 she is the Head of the Allergy Unit of Hospital Clinico San Carlos (Madrid) and associate professor of Medicine at Universidad Complutense in Madrid. Previously, she was the Director of the Fellowship Program in Allergology at her institution. She is also responsible professor for the education on food allergy in the master program “Human nutrition and dietetics” at the same university. Prof Fernandez-Rivas is the Head of the Allergy Research Group of the Instituto de Investigación Sanitaria San Carlos (IdISSC), where she is also the vice-president of the Research Committee. She is a member of the steering committee of the Spanish Network for Allergy Research (Instituto de Salud Carlos III, RETICS ARADyAL), in which her group is also integrated. Her research activity focuses on food allergy, and her studies have been crucial to understand the epidemiology of the disease and the allergens involved. Her work has not only contributed to improve the diagnosis and treatment of food allergy, but it has also increased the safety and quality of life of allergic patients through the clarification of threshold doses leading to a more rational food labeling. Prof Fernandez-Rivas has been principal investigator of multiple grants funded by Spanish public agencies, and of several integrated projects funded by the European Union (SAFE, CREATE, EuroPrevall, FAST, iFAAM). Since 2009 she also acts as reviewer for European research calls. Moreover, Prof Fernandez- Rivas significantly collaborated with the project of EAACI Allergen Immunotherapy Guidelines, and was a key contributor of the guidelines on oral immunotherapy and anaphylaxis. Overall, she has published more than 150 scientific articles and 10 book chapters. She has been invited speaker to more than 60 national and international scientific conferences. Prof Fernandez-Rivas served as chair of the food allergy interest group of the Spanish Society for Allergology and Clinical Immunology (SEAIC) (2003-2010) and of EAACI (2013-2015), and she was the scientific coordinator of several EAACI Allergy Schools, of SEAIC 2011 International Symposium on Food Allergy in Barcelona and of EAACI 2014 Food Allergy and Anaphylaxis Meeting (FAAM) in Dublin. Susanne Halken – Daniel Bovet award for Treatment and Prevention The 2019 Daniel Bovet Award for Treatment and Prevention is awarded to Prof. Dr. Susanne Halken from Odense, Denmark. As a pediatric allergologist her research focus has been on risk factors for development of allergic diseases and on the prevention thereof. She was responsible for large successful clinical projects aiming at long term follow-up of prospective birth cohort studies, as well as observational and interventional studies. Her scientific output is reflected by more than 100 publications resulting at a current H-factor of 41. Within EAACI, Susanne Halken has a long-standing track record, striving to continuously improve high quality research and clinical practice across Europe by continuous training. She was chairing the Pediatric Section and became Excom member, and was one of the driving forces to put together the first EAACI Food Allergy and Anaphylaxis Guidelines published 2014. Lastly, she was Scientific programme coordinator for the Annual Congresses between 2016-17. Whoever had the opportunity to closely collaborate with Susanne Halken has experienced her dedication to the specialty, her persistence to work towards common goals and to go for the best scientific output as possible while enabling a team spirit. Moreover, Susanne Halken has been a dedicated medical doctor aiming to treat children suffering from allergy and asthma. Her dry sense of humor and her dedication to her profession makes her an outstanding candidate for receiving this esteemed award. Each year, EAACI honours European researchers and clinicians who have contributed significantly to the development of innovative diagnostic and therapeutic strategies for control and prevention of allergic diseases, to the understanding of their pathophysiology and to the strengthening of allergology as a specialty in Europe.
