But many medically ill patients who might benefit from psychosomatic medicine do not receive it. How could we improve the ability of psychosomatic medicine to reach more patients in the future? Do new models of care work for the patients, and do they work for the therapists? We describe collaborative and proactive/integrated population-based psychiatric/psychosomatic and psychological care for medical inpatients and outpatients, the research evaluations of these models, and their implementation in clinical practice. We examine the potential opportunities and challenges of these new ways of working for psychosomatic medicine clinicians, and will also discuss whether they could work in Germany.
